Gun filters are the last line of defense against particles and trash in the material, before it reaches the spray tip.  If you're experiencing clogged tips on a regular basis, either your filter is clogged or you're running a filter with a mesh size that's too large.

Cleaning your gun filter should be done whenever you clean the rest of your system for optimal maintenance and they usually last a long time as long as you keep them clean.  Over time though, particles can collect in the mesh and no matter how much cleaning you perform, they stay clogged.  If you're experiencing clogged tips even after cleaning the filter, it might be time for a new filter.  As a rule of thumb, it's always a good idea to keep an extra filter on hand to keep your down-time to a minimum.
